It’s the nicest of days, there’s a Spring in the air,
The kind that brings feelings I just want to share.
It’s a day that inspires, that one thing is clear,
So I’ll write what I’m thinking, and I’ll start that right here.
The trees have all started to show their green leaves,
There’s a flowery sweetness that carries the breeze,
And I’m soaking it in with each thoughtful breath.
These are the days where my mind feels best.
My thoughts can slow down, and my worry can rest,
I can focus, instead, on the things I like best.
I indulge without guilt in the things that I want,
Like a hike in the woods, or a chocolate croissant.
It’s the right kind of day to be writing a post
’cause the words get all flowy when I need them the most,
I just type the first thing that my hands want to type,
They don’t always make sense, but still that’s quite alright.
But not every day is as sunny as this,
There are those that arrive that I’d rather have missed.
It’s a shame when they come, but there hard to evade,
They’re a part of lives, just as common as shade.
See, life is not always the smoothest of things,
It has bumps, jumps and hurdles, and critters that sting.
For each sunny morning, there comes a dark night,
And with it, reflections that aren’t always bright.
Our day may have come with some tough news to take,
Or a hard situation that caused us to break.
There are challenges, mighty, and obstacles tall,
When the tiniest of things isn’t really that small.
In these harshest of times, when I want to escape,
When there’s too many un-tasty things on my plate,
And all that I want is to run, duck, or hide,
When there to do but just sit down and cry.
We all have these things that we like to avoid,
That we don’t want to face, and they take all the joy.
Things we dislike, that we deflect the most,
Things like our taxes, or eating burnt toast!
Be it conflict, or traffic, or a yearly review,
These difficult things can mess up our view;
Be it that of ourselves, or the world at large,
And the thoughts they present can often take charge.
And despite knowing better, taking back our control,
Can be tougher than tough, as our mind takes its toll.
But if we take a deep breath and seek out the source,
We have the best chance at reversing its course.
Conflict, for me, is the hardest of things,
It makes me feel strange with the bubbles it brings,
Though perfectly normal, and not always big,
It makes my poor tummy start dancing a jig.
I like to keep peace, that’s just who I am,
I will make people laugh whenever I can.
I know it’s a way that can help me to cope,
As hang on so tight to a fraying old rope.
For laughter can do what anger can not:
Untangle the tangliest tangle of knots.
That said, I still know, of its time and its place,
Because conflict, as well, can create a good space.
Not just is it normal, but sometimes it’s good,
It can help to make sense of things mis-understood!
It give us a glimpse at another perspective,
And can lead then, instead, to a common objective.
But unless we can talk and approach it together,
The path carved ahead, it will never get better.
Where discomfort exists, at the start of this lesson
Empathy, in turn, is a resulting expression.
Our brains are complex, like a twisty ol’ maze
That brighten our night or darken our days.
As tough as that is, comprehending our brain,
I like that not every day is the same.
But I’ll not end this here, not on this note, my friends,
This is not quite the spot where these deep thoughts should end.
Though while there, indeed, are some difficult times,
There are much better things, reserved just for rhymes.
Right now as I type this, at a quarter to five,
In my yard, on a couch, with the sun in the sky,
My daughters both playing, on their big trampoline,
With a sprinkler beneath, and above them a dream.
As they bounce up and down, and they fill up the air
With innocent young laughter and the love that they share,
I go back to the start, where my thoughts all began
And remember what makes me the person I am:
It’s the nicest of days, there’s a Spring in the air,
The kind that brings feelings I just want to share.
It’s a good day today, that one thing is clear,
It’s just one day of many, and I’m glad that it’s here.
