What Matters Most

Aug 25, 2024

Every Sunday I write a publish the things that have been on my mind over the course of the past week; an exercise that brings me a great deal of joy and small amount of stress.  Finding topics to write about may not alway be a challenge, but finding a thousand words to fill the space certainly can be.  Maybe the weather is to blame, or perhaps it’s how I slept (or didn’t sleep) the night before – whatever the reason, sometimes the words just aren’t there, and while my initial instinct is to beat myself up over that, I am fortunate to have a such a great partner who reminds me that it’s ok to take a break and that the whole purpose of this blog is, first and foremost, for me.

With that in mind, there are many topics and thoughts on my brain:  rainy Riverfest adventures, end of Summer countdown, Disney planning, very real and serious thoughts of opening my own fine foods grocery store, the fact that I’ve never tried caviar, that I’m working on a new book with Sarah, what it means to retire and when I’ll be able to do it, new Lego sets, so many different ideas and subjects to cover, yet none of them strike me strongly enough to write a full passage today.  Even as I write this I am sitting by a dock in Bancroft, as the sun washes over me.  I am surrounded by the love of friends who I rarely get to see, and my biggest worry is what I should be writing about, which is an equation that doesn’t exactly feel right.

So instead of sitting here trying desperately to conjure up what keys my fingers should be pecking, I am instead going to share the words of others who have inspired and touched me over the years; and as I rarely do on a Sunday, I am going to cut my own words short,  close my laptop, enjoy this sunshine and the company that I’m in since I so rarely get to enjoy it, and that is truly what deserves my attention and love today.

I hope you all enjoy your Sunday in much the same way.

“What matters most are the simple pleasures so abundant that we can all enjoy them…Happiness doesn’t lie in the objects we gather around us. To find it, all we need to do is open our eyes.”
